3/5 Rooms Daily Routine

  • 8.00 – 8.30 Breakfast
  • 8.30 – 9.00 Free Play
  • 9.00 – 9.10 Registration Daily Register of all children. Weather Chart. Discussion with children as to what is available and what they would like to do during the session.
  • 9.10 – 11.20 Free Play

During this time the room is set out into five key areas:

  1. sand, water and paint
  2. snack and baking
  3. computer and arts and crafts
  4. construction, jigsaws and physicalm
  5. house, books and writing

The children are encouraged to self select activities which offer a wide range of experiences and develop their individual preferences. Some of these activities are adult led and planned for in consultation with the children. This enables staff to carry out observation of the children ensure each child is participating at their own particular level.

We also have dental hygiene programme and during this time the children are encouraged to brush their teeth.

Twice a week we have gymnastics instructor and the children work towards a programme to make them aware of healthy living. French is also available to our children and which, is funded by the parents who wish their children to participate in the programme.

At some point in the session small groups of children will work with their ‘key worker’ and are assessed to ascertain what stage of their development they have reached which informs staff as to what stage of development the children have reached and what their next steps would be.

Snack is available to the children and is set out as a ‘snack bar’. This encourages the social development of the children and they learn how to help one another. There are snack cards which the children post in a box, when they have had their snack. This alerts staff to the children who have not had the opportunity to have snack and staff will encourage them to participate. On different days each week staff carry out observations to ensure the children are eating what is available and if not why? Children have an input as to what is being provided for snack by discussing with staff what they like and dislike. Staff explain what the best options are and how they affect the child’s well being.

  • 11.20 – 11.30 Tidy up time. This encourages the children’s self help skills and respect for their equipment and each other.
  • 11.30 – 12.00 Physical Play
  • 12.00 – 12.30 Lunch Time

Lunch Time

Prior to lunch the children are encouraged to look at their personal hygiene, by washing their hands before sitting down at the lunch table.

The lunch is self selection, with staff ensuring each child is accessing a well balanced diet. Children are encouraged to try new foods and be aware of healthy eating. We following the ‘Eat Well to Play Well’ initiative.

The afternoon programme mirrors the morning with alternative equipment and activities available to our children. This ensures our full time children are accessing a wide variety of activities through out the day.

Tea time for the children is between 4.00 and 4.30 again providing a varied and healthy snack.

After tea the children participate in free play until it is time to go home.

As we have a large out door play area the children undertake activities outside. We have a sensory garden and a vegetable garden, which the children look after and watch the seeds grow into healthy plants. They grow their own vegetables and make soup and snack with this produce.

This is a sample routine that is followed by the day nursery. The Community Nursery operates for two and half hour per day and therefore the routine is slightly altered to accommodate a shorter day.
